Degrees and Certifications:
I was born in the mid-west, Central Illinois, to be specific. I miss the distinct seasons but not the long cold winters. I joined the Army when I was 19 and spent the next 13 years serving the country in various places throughout the world. During that time, I gained two beautiful daughters, an honorable discharge, and a Bachelor of Science degree that allowed me to enroll in the Alternative Teacher Certification through Region 12 and Texas educator.
After 8 years as a special education teacher, I earned a Master of Science degree in Counseling Psychology and became a certified school counselor at Mountain View Elementary School. I have been at MVES since 2008.
The past few years have seen an increased awareness in public education throughout the country of the importance of social-emotional learning. Mountain View ES has used Conscious Discipline as our primary social-emotional approach. Conscious Discipline is an evidence-based, trauma-informed approach to social-emotional learning. Conscious Discipline provides an array of behavior management strategies and classroom structures that teachers can use to turn everyday situations into learning opportunities. The seven powers of Conscious Discipline and their associated skills are;
-Power of Perception & the Skill of Composure
-Power of Attention & the Skill of Assertiveness
-Power of Unity & the Skill of Encouragement
-Power of Free Will & the Skill of Choices
-Power of Acceptance & the Skill of Empathy
-Power of Love & the Skill of Positive Intent
-Power of Intention & the Skill of Consequences
