Killeen ISD Promotes the Power of PreK
Killeen ISD reminds parents of free, ongoing, full-day, pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten programs available to 4- and 5-year-old children within the district.
Current enrollment for kindergarten and pre-kindergarten are significantly lower than school district projections. District leaders anticipated 7,031 students for those early grade levels. To date, enrollment stands at 5,958.
Trendlines across the state suggest parents are choosing to keep their youngest learners home or are unaware of the free programs available to them.
Military families living on post can also take advantage of free, full-day pre-kindergarten for 3-year-olds. If a child meets the qualifications for PreK-3 or PreK-4, they will automatically be placed in the program.
Children who complete pre-kindergarten are more prepared for kindergarten, develop age-appropriate skills and benefit from a balanced approach to early literacy and socialization. PreK-3 class sizes are small and each classroom includes two adults, a certified teacher and a classroom aide.
Due to COVID-19, KISD limited its annual Pre-K Roundup to a virtual event. Also, the district’s usual community outreach at local retailers did not happen during the summer.

language. The letters in TELPAS stand for the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System. The
Texas Education Agency developed TELPAS to meet state and federal requirements. Texas annually
assesses the English language proficiency of students who have been identified as English learners (ELs) in
four language domains—listening, speaking, reading, and writing. TELPAS evaluates the progress that each
EL makes in becoming proficient in the use of academic English.https://tea.texas.gov/…/files/Final_Spanish_TELPAS%20FAQ.PDF
