Degrees and Certifications:
Greetings! I have been an educator for 42 years. My teaching experiences have ranged from teaching Eskimo children in Alaska, working for DODDS in Germany, and finishing my 34th year with KISD. My background in education, nearly 42 years ago, began as a special education teacher in KISD. I am so blessed to start my 30th year as a counselor at Mountain View. I love and enjoy my career as an elementary counselor. I am originally from a small town in Georgia. I graduated with a B.S. in Special Education from Georgia College and seven years later I received my Master's Degree in Counseling from Western Kentucky University.
My family is a very important part of my life. My husband(Beau) and I just celebrated our 44th wedding anniversary. I am blessed with two daughters who were both educated in KISD. I now have three grandchildren. Spending time in the classrooms with my teachers and children is the highlight of my day. It is my mission to KNOW all of the names of my students as well as building a lifelong relationship with them and their families. I can't imagine doing anything else.
It has been determined that a student's social-emotional learning is a strong predictor for their success. The ability of a student to self-regulate is a better predictor for life-long success than academic skills. Stress and trauma have been called a hidden or invisible epidemic pattern in the U.S. At MVES, we use Conscious Discipline as a model to support our students, staff, and parents along this journey.
The seven powers of Conscious Discipline and their associated skills are:
1. Power of Perception- Skill of Composure
2. Power of Attention- Skill of Assertiveness
3. Power of Unity- Skill of Encouragement
4. Power of Free Will- Skill of Choices
5. Power of Acceptance- Skill of Empathy
6. Power of Love- Skill of Positive Intent
7. Power of Intention-Skill of Consequences
Teachers and staff use CD strategies to help students cope with everyday life even when things do not their way.
