Parent Welcome Letter

  • Lighthouse shining near the ocean Our Vision projects our Future!

Welcome to Harker Heights Elementary School! Harker Heights has a long history of success. In fact, the school originally opened in the fall of 1964! At Harker Heights Elementary, we focus on teaching children so that each can be successful in life. We maintain high standards of expectation; while recognizing the beauty of childhood. We build upon the vision that academics, character and relationships are equally important.  We encourage your support in assisting us in the education of your child.

Please read our student handbook to get more details about Harker Heights. You will also find your child’s teacher will be most helpful as you work as a team for the education of your child. Harker Heights Elementary is filled with approximately 750 children and 100 staff members. In the front office, you will be greeted by our secretaries: Kristal Nunn, Amy Hernandez and Kristy Norman. Anytime you have a question, just call the school! We are here to serve.

Each month we have Family Night which begins with a parents’ meeting from 5:30-6:00. At this meeting we will discuss school matters based on parent interest. This follows with teacher, parent and student activities in the classrooms that range from Family Math Night to our annual School Picnic. In the past we have averaged 300 in monthly attendance at Family Nights. Normally Family Nights fall on the 3rd Thursday of the month. This is an excellent time to get to know our community.

The school day begins at 7:00 AM when breakfast is served. Breakfast and morning recess are from 7:00 AM to 7:25 AM for grades K-5. PK students go to their classrooms upon arrival between 7:00 AM and 7:30 AM.  Classroom instruction begins at 7:30 AM. At 7:30, all children should be in their classrooms ready for the day. Please make certain that your child arrives at school on time each day.

Breakfast is served to all children for free at HHES! PK students eat breakfast in their rooms at 7:30. Kinder-5th grade children eat breakfast in the cafeteria between 7:00 and 7:30.  Students will have morning recess between 7:00 and 7:25 while it is light outside. When the days become shorter and it is dark outside; students come inside before school. Morning recess will begin the second week of school. Should the temperature be above 90°, below 40°, when the days are shorter and it is dark outside, or we have precipitation; students will wait outside their classrooms before school.

In order to provide a safe haven for all children, we ask that all parents and visitors enter through the front lobby and receive a visitor’s badge. The side entrances will be locked during school hours for the safety of the children. Please bring identification card each day when you pick up your child. You will be asked to show identification every time you seek to pick up your child early and each time there is a change in dismissal which includes substitute teachers. The first few weeks of school, classroom teachers will ask you for your identification each day.

Harker Heights Elementary is limited in parking! In order to maximize safety and space for walkers, riders, and bus students, we have designated drop-off’s and pick-up locations. With your help, all transportation runs much smoother. The front parking lot on Ann Blvd. will be reserved for parent-guest parking and for riding students’ drop-off and pickup. All driving parents are asked to use the front parking lot for child drop-off and pick-up.  The side parking lot on Bobwhite and the back parking lot on Harley will be reserved for faculty parking. All daycare transporters are asked to pick up their students on Bobwhite.  Walking 3rd-5th grade students will be dismissed on Harley. Parents will pick up PK-2nd grade students on Ann. Walking PK-2nd students will be dismissed on Ann. The buses will load on Dove Street.  All students will be escorted by faculty members to each pick up site. These dismissal procedures are very tight. Our parking lot is very limited. However, if all follow the procedures; all areas are cleared safely within 15 minutes.

In order to volunteer or participate in school activities such as field day or field trips, you will need to have clearance with a background check. This can be done through the KISD website. Please do this early so that you will be ready for your child’s field trips or activities. This is for safety for all children.

The first bell rings at 7:25 AM. The tardy bell rings at 7:30. Students are considered late after 7:30 AM. At this time, parents must sign their students into the building. Please make every effort to help your child be successful by starting each day fresh and on time.

During the day, teachers will be focusing their attention on the children, so they will be available to talk with parents after school or during their conference periods.  If you wish to talk with your child’s teacher at another time, please notify the office so that arrangements can be made to supervise all the children in the class.

School will be dismissed at 3:00 PM. As teachers and students are preparing for end of day necessities, students will not be released from class between 2:30 PM and 3:00 PM.  Students are encouraged to go straight home after school. Students will not remain after school for activities without 24 hour notice to the parents. Parents are asked to send a written note to their child’s teacher should a dismissal change be needed.

I look forward to meeting you and watching your child grow and learn this school year.  Please feel free to visit our campus or call 336-2050 if you have any questions.
