Welcome to GEAR UP at KHS!
My name is Julie McPherson and I am the GEAR UP Facilitator for the Class of 2023!
GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a federal initiative designed to increase the number of students who are prepared to enter and excel in postsecondary education.
GEAR UP Objectives
Objective 1: Increase the academic performance and preparation for postsecondary education of GEAR UP students.
Objective 2: Increase rate of high school graduation, awareness, and participation in postsecondary education for GEAR UP students through a college network.
Objective 3: Increase GEAR UP students’ education expectations and students’ and their families’ knowledge of postsecondary education options, preparation and financing.

GEAR UP will be hosting mulitple summer camps this year! Dates are still TBD but be on the look out for the following:
1. Dallas College Tour: We will be taking an overnight trip to Dallas to explore multiple colleges in the Dallas Area, including Southern Methodist University, UT Arlington, University of Dallas, and North Lake College. (10 students will be able to attend)
2. Houston College Tour: We will be taking an overnight trip to Houston to explore multiple colleges in the Houston area, including Prairie View A&M, Lone Star College, Houston Baptist, and University of Houston. (10 students will be able to attend)
3. East Texas College Tour: We will be taking an overnight trip to East Texas to explore mulitple colleges to include, Tyler Junior College, Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston State University, and Texas A&M (10 students will be able to attend)
4. Group Dynamix Lockin: This will occur on the last day of school. We will travel to Dallas and go to Group Dynamix. We will particpate in an indoor roppes course, blacklight dodgeball, archery tag, and many other fun games. We will depart school around 5 PM and return the next around 10 AM. (50 students will be able to attend)
